Ian Freckelton is an experienced Queen’s Counsel at the Victorian Bar, undertaking criminal, disciplinary, personal injury and commercial cases throughout Australia. Well known cases in which he has appeared recently have included the Lindt Cafe Inquest, the Barwon Children’s Case and the Bourke Street Mall Inquest and the litigation against Dr Patel in Queensland. He undertook the investigation into sexual misconduct of Melbourne’s Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle.
Ian is also a Judge of the Supreme Court of Nauru, a Professorial Fellow in Law and Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, an Adjunct Professor of Forensic Medicine at Monash University and an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University in the United States. He holds undergraduate degrees in Arts and Law, a PhD from Griffith University on “Expert Evidence” and a higher doctorate (an LLD) on "Health Law” from the University of Melbourne. Ian is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, the Academy of Social Sciences Australia and the Australasian College of Legal Medicine, and is a life member of the Australian Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law. He is the Editor of the Journal of Law and Medicine and the Editor-in-Chief of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law. Ian is the author of over 40 books and more than 700 peer reviewed articles and chapters of books. His most recent book is Pandemics, Public Health Emergencies and Government Powers (Federation Press, 2021).
